What’s the Deal With Cats?
I have to admit, I’ve never been a true “cat person” (I love cats, but my favorites are dogs), I have always favored dogs. However, I have grown up with cats pretty much all my life. My grandparents always had cats (usually 2), and as a child, I spent most weekends over there. The one thing I always found very funny (and still do to this day) is the fact that whenever my entire family would go over there (my mom, dad, and 2 younger sisters), the more outgoing cat would always, without fail rub against my dad’s legs and jump in his lap. Now, I’m not sure if the cat knew how my dad felt about cats (he is 100% a dog person)….but I like to think the cat knew exactly what she was doing.
It’s strange that cats have almost like a 6th sense in them, and they actively seek out the people that try the hardest to avoid them. Why is that? Well, cats by nature avoid almost any and all confrontations, they would rather back down and walk away than fight. So it is thought that people who admire and want the attention of cats are looking at them (perhaps even staring) - and the cats perceive this as someone dangerous to their safety. Whereas people who are wanting to avoid the cat by not looking at her, maybe staring at the floor - show the cat that they are not intimidating and are not looking for a fight. Kind of seems ironic doesn’t it?
Cats also have a mysterious side too…it still boggles my mind that a cat can fall from a tree and land on all fours….how do they do that?? They have a natural ability to right themselves in the air as they are falling, which I still find borderline creepy. No wonder they say cats have 9 lives…
In the world, long, long, ago, it was thought cats possessed magical powers. Those thoughts continue to some extent in this day and age. What is the one myth/superstition involving cats? “If a black cat crosses your path, it’s bad luck”, how many of you believe in this superstition? Are there others I have not heard of? For all you dog lovers out there - are there any superstitions about dogs that you know of? I would love to hear your comments on this subject!
Throughout my childhood, cats grew on me, and I have to say, I’ve got a pretty soft heart for animals of all kinds. But I can say one thing for sure, it takes a very special owner to understand and put up with some of the behavior a cat can exhibit!
Thanks for reading! As always your participation in comments and discussions is encouraged and greatly appreciated!!
