Disturbing Dog Fighting News

October 29th, 2007 by dsheffler

Last weekend, the Humane Society of Missouri busted a well-organized and fairly large dog fighting ring. During this raid, a total of 25 Pit Bulls were seized from the property. As of right now, there has not been a decision made regarding what to do with the dogs. Some have argued that these animals will never be rehabilitated and will always have the “fighting” instinct in them.

Personally, I have never owned a Pit Bull of any kind, and I have on only one occasion been around one. This may not count considering the dog was part Labrador Retriever and part Pit Bull…but, I can tell you he was incredibly sweet, mild-mannered (although somewhat hyper - but he was only 1 year old!), and incredibly affectionate. He also knew the commands “Sit”, “Stay”, and “Down”…..he did not act like an aggressive dog at all.

If any of you have ever seen the television show “Dog Whisperer”, you know that Cesar Millan owns dogs of all different breeds - including Pit Bulls. Why in the world would a professional dog trainer have these dogs? Well, if you have read his book, you would know. He says Pit Bulls are very affectionate dogs, and are also very loyal. It is people who push them into dog fighting. As I mentioned in an earlier post, people push certain behaviors on their pets, and this is especially true with Pit Bulls.

The Humane Society of Missouri most likely will euthanize the 25 dogs seized. I saw a news report on the animals, and all the dogs they showed looked scared, and timid. They stood wagging their tails at the volunteers, and some of them were even standing as close as they could to a human being. It appeared they were looking for some comfort. How sad that we are allowing these animals to be put down…..no one has even given them a chance, they have been written off because of their breed. I am hoping that these dogs are not euthanized, and I will keep you up to date on their conditions.

The two “leaders” of the dog fighting ring are in jail, but chances are they will get only a slap on the wrist and then be released. Just because they have been caught does not mean they are going to stop what they are doing. Why is it that animals are treated with such indifference? If a man beats up his wife, he is arrested and taken to jail for domestic violence…..and his punishment is usually considerable. Animals have feelings too, they bleed the same as humans, and if we as a society are going to stand back and continue to let disgusting people (such as the two arrested for the dog fighting) get away from their crimes….then we are doomed.

The human race is supposed to be compassionate, and protecting of the creatures around us. I just want to know when this changed and why?? It seems every week there is a story on the news of animal abuse, and it turns my stomach to see them. Please, let’s all regain our compassion and put an end to senseless animal abuse!
