A MUST READ FOR ALL PET OWNERS!!

THIS POST COULD SAVE YOUR PET’S LIFE!! Last night, I watched an interesting show on television. It was called “The Iron Mask” and basically the show is about 5 ordinary people who come on stage and reveal their deepest, darkest secrets. The only catch is that each person is wearing a mask over their face to conceal their identity. One particular person interested me, and gave me some insight into the mind of a terrible person, one who has no feelings towards animals whatsoever. Today I am going to share with you what he said on the show and give you pointers to avoid these kinds of people in your own neighborhood.

He talked about dog fighting but that wasn’t exactly what caught my attention. He spoke of stealing pets from backyards and he sounded completely detached from what he was doing - he didn’t care at all that he was hurting both the animals and their owners. He said he typically looked for small dogs, ones that would not pose a threat to his own dogs. What did he do with the dogs once he captured them? He took them back to his house and used them to train his pit bulls to fight. He would let the pit bull attack the smaller dog until it was dead. He did this so his dogs would be ready to take on any other dog in the fighting ring.

What made me the maddest at this person was that he did not show any remorse or guilt for what he was doing. The host even asked him what he thought when he saw “Lost Dog” posters plastered around the neighborhood (knowing that it was a dog he had taken and what had happened to it) and his response was that he thought it was funny. She also asked him if there were other people like him in different neighborhoods and he thought what he was doing was fairly common. How absolutely terrible that people have this opinion of animals and think that they are just objects without feelings of any kind. He referred to dogs as “money makers” and said it is common for him to earn anywhere from $100 - $1,000 per dog fight.

My whole point of telling you about this guy is so you can pay attention and understand that there are people in this world who do not care about the well-being of your pet. Your pet (from the above example) isn’t even safe in your own backyard. So what can you do to protect your pet?

  1. Make sure when your pet is outside that you are able to see him
  2. Keep your backyard well-lit
  3. Only keep your pet outside alone when it is absolutely necessary, otherwise you should have an eye on him at all times
  4. If you have an outside pet make sure their sleeping area is close to your house - it is much better to have your pet sleeping indoors with you, but under certain circumstances this may not be feasible
  5. Keep an eye out for strange or suspicious people in your neighborhood - although thy may not be after pets, they could be looking to break into someone’s car or house. If you see anything out of the ordinary, call the police and report it.

The best thing you can do as a pet owner is keep a diligent eye out for your pet. It only takes a few minutes for someone to come along and snatch them, so keep your pets in your sight at all times. This is especially true around this time of year for people who own black cats. There are really sick people out there, and the scary part is you never know where they could be. Please keep your pets safe, it would be your worst nightmare if your pet got lost, and an even bigger nightmare if you were never reunited.
