How to Help Your Pet Go “Green”!

December 5th, 2007 by dsheffler

These days, plenty of attention is being given to environmentally friendly products such as cars that run on electricity, energy saving light bulbs, even bans on plastic grocery bags! But did you know that you can extend your eco-friendliness to your pets? Today, I’m going to talk about products on the market today that are organic and I’ll help you get your pet “green”!!

Wind farm in the Netherlands

Let’s start with the products you use to bathe your pets. Did you ever notice that washing your pooch in the same spot every day turns your grass brown? There are so many chemicals in dog shampoos, some you can’t even being to pronounce! The ingredients are harsh and completely fake. The online store Cain and Abel Collections realized this can’t be good for your pet and developed a new formula! Their products are first tested on humans……rather than the other way around!!

Next up is toys. One company, West Paw Dog Design gives customers who purchase a chew toy the chance to return it for a replacement. The company takes the returned toys, recycles them, and uses them to make brand new chew toys!

The poop scoop: did you know there are biodegradable “poop bags” on the market? I didn’t either…..these bags can run around $20 for 100, and can get incredibly expensive. If you aren’t looking to spend that much, you can always reuse your plastic grocery store bags.

If you’re looking to get your pet “green” you aren’t alone! All over the country, there has been an increase in demand for organic products. Experts are saying the cost for specialty items is falling because consumers are creating an economy and manufacturer’s are responding.

How do you know the products you are buying are really “green”? The key is to ask lots of questions and do your research!! Some products may say “Environmentally Friendly” or “Organic” on the label, but always be willing to look deeper. The internet can be a vault of information and doing your research ensures you are supporting the best, most deserving companies! If you aren’t wanting to look things up online, don’t be afraid to ask the salespeople specific questions about the product. The staff should be knowledgeable and should help guide you to make good, informed decisions.

[…] I mentioned in a previous post a toy company who encouraged customers to send back their chewed-up toys. The company recycles the old toys, using them to manufacture new ones. This is just one of the many examples out there - all you have to do is look!! […]
