Animals Seized By SPCA May Be Put Up For Adoption

January 30th, 2008 by dsheffler

More than 200 animals were seized from a Texas home on January 25 including dogs, cats, spiders, cockroaches, and bearded dragons.  The animals were seized by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) from a double-wide trailer where they were living in horrible conditions.

Since Friday, the animals have been at the SPCA and volunteers have been nursing them back to health.  The over 200 animals seized included: 68 dogs, 16 rabbits, 15 guinea pigs, 13 gerbils, 12 mice, 12 rats, seven doves, seven horses, four hamsters, three chickens, three parakeets, two dwarf hamsters, two hedgehogs, two cockatiels, two goats, one lovebird, one African gray parrot, one sheep, one pot-bellied pig, one opossum, one frog, one pink toe tarantula,  one millipede, one white nose coatimundi, 26 hissing cockroaches, and two bearded dragons.

The conditions the animals were absolutely disgusting.  Could you imagine what a double-wide trailer would look like crammed with all the animals listed above?  Can you even think about the smell?  Rescuers found animals in sheds, outdoor pens, as well as scattered around the property.  Some of the animals were found inside the trailer living in their own filth.

The dogs were very thin, and most of them had ear and eye infections.  A lot of them were found to be suffering from hair loss and overgrown nails.  Among the mess, surprisingly only 2 animals were found dead (1 guinea pig and 1 frog).

It has not yet been determined if the animals will be put up for adoption or if they will be returned to their owners.  No charges have been filed yet.

Reading through this story, is it just me or does it seem a little ridiculous if no charges are filed?  What rational person thinks it is okay to house more than 200 animals in their double-wide trailer?  Farm owners don’t even have 200 animals!  If these animals are released to their owners, I just don’t see what the point was to seize them in the first place…..was it to get them healthy only to be taken back to the horrible conditions they were just living in?

Do any of you feel the same way?  I almost think we are too light on owners who have this complete lack of care.  Can we honestly think the animals will be released to good owners?  Not at all, I mean….look at this objectively….200 animals, with 2, maybe 3 caretakers??  Does this even begin to make sense?  Animal abusers in this country get away with more and more these days.  It would be different if we were talking about one owner who had 5 animals….but we are talking about OVER 200 animals!!

This story makes me incredibly sad and I wish the penalties for animal abuse and neglect were stiffer in this country.  I will keep you informed on any charges and whether or not the animals will be put up for adoption.

Please leave me your comments on this post I am anxious to hear what your thoughts are on this sad topic.

Thanks for reading!!  As always your participation in comments and discussions are encouraged and greatly appreciated!

I can’t believe there were that many animals inside that teeny of a space.
    That makes my heart sick.
    Thank God for the ASPCA.

We are DEFINITELY too light on animal abusers (neglectors - is that a word?) in this country.
Sometimes I wonder if it’s just because the problem is so rampant and widespread, and there is a lack of resources to help curb it. The resources we do have, like the ASPCA, are usually understaffed…
