Companies Provide Relief, Comfort After Loss of Pet
Losing a pet is one of the hardest things an owner has to go through, but there are some companies that aim to make the process less painful and less stressful. Today I am going to go over a couple options you have when your pet passes away.
When my last dog was getting older, she had a bunch of health problems they ranged from the serious to the not-so serious and a decision was made to have her put to sleep. It was a very difficult choice, but I honestly feel it was the right one. We decided not to have her cremated or bury her in our yard (in some cities it is against ordinances to bury pets in your yard), so her body was cremated communally.
When I was growing up, we had a huge backyard that ended by a forest with lots of trees. We always buried our deceased animals out there, and I think it was a very peaceful spot for them to be at rest. With how homes are these days being so close to each other it just doesn’t seem like a good place to bury your animal.
You have a few different options when it comes to what to do with your pet to make it comfortable and peaceful. You can: bury your animal (either in your yard or in a pet cemetery), have your animal cremated privately, or have your animal cremated at your local veterinarian’s office or humane society. Let’s go over two of your options:
Burial of your pet in a pet cemetery:
- Most pet cemeteries also offer cremation, but for this section, I am only going to focus only on the burial. I truly believe that within the next few years, we will see wakes and complete funeral services held for family pets. It is a fact that people are spending more money on their animals than in years past, and they want to give their pets the very best of everything.
- Companies that provide burials will offer you a variety of caskets and memorials to go along with your plot. This is incredibly comforting for pet owners, and it will really feel as if you are giving your pet everything it deserves. This also helps give you a place to go when you wish to be closer to your pet, you can visit, leave flowers, or just have a quiet moment together.
- Another service available at many pet cemeteries is their ability to pick your pet up. This means you do not have to drive your pet to the cemetery - they will do that for you. It is a great service to offer and I know it has been incredibly helpful to owners.
Cremating your pet:
- This is a great idea for people who want to be close to their pet every day and be able to display their pet’s ashes. Crematories will also pick your pet up - saving you the emotional drive.
- At some crematoriums you are able to be with your pet until the very end - some people find it very comforting to be able to be their throughout the process.
- If you choose to have your pet cremated individually many places provide you with a box for the ashes and will either bring it to your home, have it mailed to you, or you have the option of picking it up.
- Price for cremation varies and is figured based upon how much your pet weighs. It is very affordable and communal cremations can cost between $40 - $100.
- Cremating your pet is also a good idea if you have a location that was one of your pets favorite places to go - you can sprinkle the ashes there and know that your pet is resting in peace.
I know it may seem like a silly thing, but I really do think that we will see wakes with visiting hours and even church services for deceased pets in the very near future. Millions of people around the world own pets and we want to give them the absolute best treatment we possibly can. making sure that our pets are resting in peace is one of the many things we can do for them.
One company I ran across is called Heavenly Days Animal Crematory and they run an exceptional business. They will pick your pet up from your veterinarian or animal shelter and they give you the option of witnessing the cremation. They will deliver your pets ashes in a wooden box complete with ribbons and they will even include a lock of hair if you desire. Heavenly Days offers individual and communal cremation services. The owner, Linda Buel says they do around 50 to 60 cremations a week - equaling around 2,800 per year. This is a good company to check into if you are in the Washingto, D.C. area.
Reasons for you wanting to bury or cremate your pet may be somewhat selfish - you may always want to feel as if they are with you, and I think regardless of what you choose for them, as long as they are in your hearts and thoughts, you will always be together.
Please leave me your comments on this post, I would like to hear your stories of how you overcame your grief, any special tributes you have, or if you just want to tell us how great the pet was that you lost feel free to do so.
