A Few of My Favorite Animal Movies

August 26th, 2008 by dsheffler

It would take absolutely forever for me to name all my favorite animal movies. Today, I am going to stick with live-action movies only, and I am only going to be giving you a short list. If you have any others you would like to add, please leave me a comment and it will be published!

  • The Adventures of Milo & Otis: For those of you who have never seen this movie, it really is very cute. It centers around the two main characters: Milo (an orange tabby cat), and Otis (a Pug). Their friendship starts from birth and the whole movie is about their many adventures together.
  • Free Willy: I have always been fascinated by what life under the sea is like, and in this movie, an Orca whale becomes friends with a young boy named Jesse. The two meet under unlikely circumstances and become the best of friends. This is one of my favorites simply because it was the first movie to open my eyes and make me see how damaging it is for humans to keep wild animals in captivity. It is a great movie to watch with your children and explain to them what is going on in the movie.
  • Benji: This movie is about a small, mixed breed dog named Benji. He has a gift for being in the right place at the right time, ultimately helping people with their problems. This is also a very cute movie, and one I would recommend.
  • Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey: I am sure most of you have seen this classic movie about two dogs and a cat. The trio is dropped off to stay at a friends farm - which they do not understand will only be for a short length of time. They resolve to leave the farm in search of their family. During the movie, the animals must rely on each other for survival in order to return home safe. This is probably one of the better live-action animal movies, and it’s one of my favorites.
  • Black Beauty: I read the book and knew the story before ever seeing the movie, but when I saw the movie for the first time, I was in love. This is a great movie, and I think I just loved how the characters worked together, the story line is emotional, and uplifting. The movie follows Black Beauty through his life and we are introduced to various other characters including Ginger, Merrylegs, and Black Beauty’s owners (some of which are kind, some are not so kind). The movie (and book of the same name) do much to teach us about kindness, sympathy, and the treatment of horses. This movie will be a classic for years to come, and if you have not seen, I highly recommend it!
  • Old Yeller: I have to be perfectly honest - I have never seen the end of this movie. I have tried to watch it quite a few times but since I know how the story ends, I am never able to go through with it. The movie focuses on the Coates family and how they gain a companion in Old Yeller. I am not going to spoil the end for anyone, but it is incredibly sad. It is however one of the best live-action animal movies (even if the ending isn’t a happy one).

I hope you enjoyed my list, and please feel free to leave a comment on which live-action animal movies are your favorites!
