Self Defense
Recently, I have heard several news stories where police officers have been called to someone’s home and have ended up shooting and killing a dog. Police officers are saying this is in self-defense, that the dog was coming after them and they had no choice but to shoot it.
I don’t understand why people would encourage their pets to attack, run at, or threaten police officers. Don’t they (the owners) think it would be wise to maybe keep the dogs tied up instead of having them rush at the police officers? I think it is a shame that some people think they can use their dogs as weapons, and I have to be perfectly honest, there are more than a few intimidating dogs around. If you are a stranger and you have no idea what kind of temperament the dog has, you have no idea how he will react or what lengths he will go to in order to protect his owner.
If given the choice, I am sure police officers would prefer to not shoot an animal, but some people leave them no choice in the matter. People purchase and raise dogs for the wrong reasons sometimes. Dogs should not be used as a self defense product, that is not what they are for. Stores sell self defense products – if you are interested in feeling safe, you should look into those rather than purchasing a dog.
