Winter is Coming!
Alright, we all know it isn’t swimwear season anymore, whether we want it to or not, winter is coming! So what can you do to make sure your pet is safe this winter? Well, there are a lot of things to take into consideration.
If your dog stays outside, you need to make sure he has a suitable dog house to keep him warm. It would be helpful to line the inside of the dog house with old blankets to make sure no cold air gets into any cracks. Even if you have a dog with a thick coat, it is still important to make sure their shelter outside is plenty warm enough.
Another thing to remember if your dog is left outdoors is to constantly check to make sure their water is not frozen. Even in the winter, your pets need water to live. Cases are still reported of dogs and cats losing their lives due to dehydration, so this is very crucial.
Food is also important to your pet, and during the winter months no matter if your pet is living outdoors or indoors. During the months leading up to winter, you may notice that your pet is beginning to eat more. Our pets use body fat to keep warm, and by eating extra food, they are able to build up their natural body fat to help them keep warm in the cold months.
If your pet stays indoors, you are going to have to take them outdoors to use the restroom and get exercise. Be sure to keep your time outside limited – especially for short-haired animals (they have much less protection against the elements). Some people elect to dress their dogs and cats in sweaters to help keep them warm. This is completely up to you, but I suggest sweaters for smaller dogs, and animals with short hair.
