Cats and Your Countertops

Why is it that cats like to be up on the counters? This is something I never really completely understood about them. I always thought perhaps they liked to be high atop bathroom fixtures, kitchen cabinets, and appliances because cats have a way of seeming to be better than you.  My grandparents’ cats used to have a little cup of water for them in the kitchen sink, so they would always be jumping up on the counter to get their drink.

It seems odd, but I wonder if any of you have had your cat stuck in a really high place in your house?  Where is the strangest place you have found your cat perched and what do you think she was doing up there?  I’d love to hear your comments on this very interesting subject.
