Dog Memory Span

Do you think your dog’s memory is the same as laptop memory?  Sorry to tell you, but the answer to that question is no.  While we may think that our dog’s have a great memory, the truth is that they do not have as great a memory as we do.  It seems our dogs know when dinner time is, what time you will be arriving home, and sometimes it even seems they remember where they are going when they get in the car.  Some people believe that a dog’s memory can last only 10 hours.  Meaning that if you leave your dog for 10 hours or more, she will start to forget the life you had.  While others believe that a dog’s memory can last as long as they live.

From personal experience I can say that a dog’s memory does last longer than 10 hours.  I have left my dog at a kennel while on vacation for over a week, and when I went to pick her up, she remembered who I was and she was very glad to see me.  Anyone who thinks that a dog does not have a good memory is mistaken.  My dog knew when dinner was, knew what time everyone would be arriving home, and even knew when bedtime was.  She remembered from day to day the routine and schedule of the household so I would say that her memory was pretty good.

A dog’s memory may also depend on the breed and the environment as well as what training you have given her.  By teaching your dog tricks and basic obedience commands you are strengthening her memory.  Every day you should test her memory and see how well she remembers certain commands.
