Walking Your Dog

There are many benefits to walking your dog which even extend to you (the owner).  The one major reason people walk their dogs is for exercise which is helpful to drain your dog of energy while giving you an all important workout.  Did you know that the time you spend walking your dog is beneficial to his emotional well-being too?

If you are walking your dog properly, with you taking the role of a leader, you are strengthening the emotional bond you have with your dog.  He sees you as being in complete control of the walk which will help increase the amount of respect he has for you.

If you are walking your dog and looking for ways to lose a few pounds, there are some easy things you can do to increase the amount of fat you are burning.  Try using wrist or ankle weights, walk briskly or jog for a few minutes, and you can also try walking over varying terrain.  Walking your dog can also help if you are trying to get over a recent injury.  Rather than using a shoulder pain pump, use the wrist weights to help strengthen your injured shoulder.  The most important thing is for you to get out there and take your dog on a nice, healthy walk – it’s good for you too!
