Can Your Pets Get Mesothelioma Cancer?

June 11th, 2009 by dsheffler

We’ve all heard of people getting Mesothelioma cancer, but did you ever stop to think about if your dog or cat could get it?  This type of cancer usually develops in people who have worked with asbestos and have breathed in the dangerous dust it produces.  People can come home with the dust on their clothes, and there have been cases reported of spouses and even children being diagnosed with the disease.

So, can dogs and cats get Mesothelioma cancer? According to veterinarians - YES.  Dogs and cats are susceptible to it because they are being exposed to the dangerous asbestos particles and can develop the disease from that.  While the cancer is not contagious, the average age of onset is around 8 years old (it has been diagnosed in older and younger dogs as well).

Symptoms in your pets are similar to those in human beings - shortness of breath, fluid around the lungs, a cough may be present, abdominal discomfort (which will result in lack of appetite), and sleep patterns may also be affected.
