Pets Are Expensive
With the still gloomy economy, many people’s homes are being foreclosed, forcing them to take their pets to shelters. Some people are looking into getting second jobs, and even taking medical coding training courses to advance their careers.
When my boyfriend and I were looking for a dog to adopt – many of the adoption agencies asked how much we thought it would cost to care for a dog for a year. This is one question that could separate people who are serious about owning a pet, and those who have not really thought about it.
You have to figure a few vet visits per year, food, treats, toys, grooming, etc. You can figure about $1,000 per year or more (depending on how quickly your dog goes through food and toys). Take the time to realize how much money you have available to spend on a pet – it does take a decent amount of money to take care of your pets, and be realistic about how much you are willing to spend.

I shake my head when I hear people are turning in their pets due to a bad economy. Yes, pets can be expensive but they are supposed to be family – you wouldn’t turn in your kids, would you? The people that drop off pets at shelters use this excuse and then turn around and spend $50 on a nice meal – that $50 could have feed their dog or cat for a month or many months depending on the size. I have 3 dogs, all from rescues ranging from 75-100lbs. No matter how “bad” it gets I’ll never turn them in. When I signed their adoption papers it was for life.
