Summer Heat and Your Dog

August 8th, 2009 by dsheffler

Just because I’m not old and searching for the best wrinkle cream doesn’t mean I don’t get exhausted from being in the heat.  I am now going to share with you a few tips on helping to keep you and your dog cool during the long… hot summer days!

These tips apply to both you and your dog.

Quick Tips

- Sunburn
Limit your dog’s exposure to the sun.
Use sunscreen (yes, there are kinds for your dog).

- Preventing Heat Stroke/Stay hydrated
Keep your dog’s hair cut (this will cool them off).
Do not have them cut down to the skin (eliminates skin protection).
“In the heat of midday, keep your dog indoors in either air conditioning or in a well-ventilated area with circulating fans.”
Keep a small pool outside (enough water for your dog to play in; the water level should not exceed your dog’s head).
Use a hose if no pool is available.
Drink plenty of water.
Find shade to cool down often if you are staying outdoors for a longer than normal period of time.

Limit exercise time!!

I’ve seen dogs in a clinical setting that were were sunburned, so I know it happens; however, I hadn’t realized that there was a sunscreen developed specifically for dogs. You have me curious. I’m going to have to dig a little deeper into this one.

You learn something new every day.
