Three Mistakes With At-Home Training
You may be considering skipping out on obedience class and training your dog at home. If so, good for you! Training at home can save you money, and you can teach the whole family training techniques. You should never expect immediate results from a training routine, and training at home isn’t easy. Here are a few suggestions to help you train your pooch.
Don’t start a training routine without doing research and formulating a plan! There are tons of books and internet resources that provide an abundance of training information. All techniques are different, and you may have to try a couple before you find the right one for you and your dog. Most resources will tell you the things you should do with your dog. You should also learn the things you shouldn’t do when training! Here are the top three mistakes people make.
The first mistake is inconsistency. As mentioned, there are a number of training techniques that are all different than the others. Pick one or two techniques and try to use them in all your training sessions. It’s also a good idea to choose one area where your pet needs help (such as chewing or barking), and start there. Throwing too many things at your dog at once can really confuse him. Having a solid training plan can also help combat inconsistency.
The second mistake is treating training as something that needs to be worked on instead of treating it as a teaching and learning session. During training, you’re establishing yourself as the boss and a friend. Keep your tone of voice in balance and your expectations in mind. Change, for anyone, takes time. You wouldn’t yell at a child for not learning to read during a teaching session, and you shouldn’t yell at your pup either.

A third mistake that pet owners make is lacking patience! Again, change takes time. Your pet won’t learn what you’re trying to teach overnight, especially if you’re inconsistent in the training. Be gentle and loving with your pet during the sessions. If you find your anger rising, then end the session for the day and try again the following day.
Training your pet can help the two of you build a strong relationship. Training is completely necessary if you expect your dog to behave in a certain way. Training and obedience also give your pooch the chance to “show off” and please you, his owner.
If you’re considering training your pet at home, then make sure you research training techniques and devise a training plan and schedule. You’ll read all about things you should do, but keep in mind three things you should not do: don’t be inconsistent, don’t treat training as a problem, and don’t lose your patience! It may take a few weeks; but once your pet starts behaving the way you want him to, your time and effort will be well worth it!

Interesting post! The first few weeks are extremely important. Enthusiasm and emotions are up. Everyone wants to feed the puppy, play with the puppy and hold the puppy. It’s important to show your puppy that you care.
