Caring For Your Overweight Pet

May 28th, 2010 by dsheffler

It can be hard having a pet that is a few pounds overweight - I know because Maggie is about 4 pounds too heavy.  We are taking her for longer walks every day and really being careful when giving her treats.  We have switched from treats like “Pupperoni” and “Beggin Strips” to all natural treats that support her digestion and are good for her.  Some people even give their pets vegetables (such as green beans) when they are overweight.

Giving your pet weight loss drinks that are intended for humans is incredibly dangerous and should not be tried under any circumstances.  If you need suggestions as to how to cut the fat out of your pet’s diet the best place to start is right at your vet’s office.  Be honest with them about how much you are feeding your pet and what you are feeding them.  If you aren’t truthful about that, the problem will never be resolved.

Is your pet overweight?  What tricks and/or tips do you have to share?  Leave your comments below!

All three of my cats are a bit overweight. I also live with my parents, so my mom does tend to overfeed them. I also am not crazy about the food she feeds them.. if it was up to me I would feed them a holistic food brand which I think is healthier and contains more nutrients. Plus if you get a grain free brand it contains less carbs as well.

Hmmm I know with my dog we would take her for walks everyday too, but she was still overweight. I think it’s also important to play with your pup during the day too. Dogs get bored and sedentary just like us. Also, keep walking your dog during those cold winter months too.

I have a Frenchie and they prone to over weight. I take him for walks almost everyday and when its playtime I try to play active game like fetch. And of course watch how you feed him
